The government and the Hungarian National Asset Management Zrt (MNV) will by June 30 provide a detailed account of the funds spent by the Finance Ministry to prepare the now defunct government district development, a decision published in the Hungarian Bulletin (Magyar Közlöny) last week revealed.
Hungary’s Socialist-led government in late 2006 announced plans to build a government quarter in the area behind the Nyugati train station in downtown Budapest, in order to cut administrative costs, but the project was eventually dropped earlier this year after it suffered multiple setbacks.
The government will also submit a proposal by year’s end on renovating the Nyugati railway station and on how to develop the building site designated for the government district.
Last year some Ft 8.2 billion was earmarked to cover the development’s preparatory costs this year, of which the Ministry has now diverted Ft 3.8 billion for other purposes.
