The Hungarian government cut the number of staff at central budget-funded institutions by 13,600 in 2006 and 2007, resulting in net savings of HUF 46bn, Finance Minister Janos Veres said at a press conference on Tuesday.
With its restructuring of the public administration system, the government aims to achieve a better economy of scale and share tasks – such as operating tax offices and ambulance services – more equitably with regional authorities, Mr Veres said.
He noted that the number of independent budget-funded institutions had been reduced to 176 at the end of 2007 from 415 in 2006.
