Sziget festival books Ft 100 million in profit

A record 380,000 people visited the Sziget festival between last Monday and Sunday before it closed for another year, organisers announced yesterday. They estimated the net profit from this year’s event at Ft 100 million.

The single-day record of 65,000 visitors was broken on three different days. The largest turnout, 70,000, appeared on Saturday for that night’s concert by R.E.M.

The tens of thousands of tourists who visit the festival do much more to promote Hungary’s image than three Tony Curtises, Magyar Hírlap observes, referring to the Hungarian-born star’s TV ads for Hungary recorded a few years ago.

Budapest is known as a festival city in the same league as England’s Glastonbury and Denmark’s Roskilde, the newspaper says.
