How many Hungarian ministers does it take to figure out the price of an apple?

para-graf.jpgThe answer is one, but it takes him several weeks. But seriously (sort of): After an exhaustive round of Henry Kissinger-style “economic diplomacy” it appears that Agriculture Minister József Gráf (at left, looking vaguely like Dr. K) has “solved” the country’s long-running “apple war”, by apparently getting the biggest processor of juice apples to agree to a price of €.09 per kilo.

While there are many preposterous things about this whole stupid story, my favorite is that last week Gráf made what he thought was a profound gesture by saying (according to business daily Világgazdaság) that in order for the country’s apple growers and apple processors to settle their differences, they would have to come up with a “compromise” between the different prices they had in mind. What an insight!

Now, as for what one communist-vintage apparatchik with a second-grader’s grasp of economics is worth…
