Social state secretary Erzsébet Kovárik has announced to a meeting of experts that 18.7% of Hungarian children and youth under the age of 24 and 13% of families live in poverty, reports fn.hu.
To tackle the situation, it is important to complete the 25-year anti-poverty strategy focusing on decreasing child poverty that was accepted in 2007, she added. The strategy is aimed at improving young people’s chances of finding secure jobs to allow them to support themselves.
A report on social cohesion will be sent to the European Commission by 15 September, said labor affairs state secretary Lajos Korózs. The paper will present the measures taken to improve the prospects of socially disadvantaged groups and the development of the pension and health care system. It also analyzes the phenomenon of child poverty, a serious problem not only in Hungary but across the continent.
