APEH sees jump in number of tax returns as economy “whitens”

Last year, 86,000 more private individuals submitted tax returns than in 2006, a result of the “whitening” economy, tax office APEH announced at a recent press conference. According to a report on Napi.hu, income from employment grew nominally by 7%, and consolidated income by 7.9% year on year, reaching Ft 7,491 billion (roughly €30 billion). The portal points out that since 2007, pensions must be displayed on tax returns. People who receive income in addition to pension are required to write the latter under non-taxable income. This amount was Ft 509 billion last year.

The number of taxpayers grew in all income zones with the exception of that under Ft 1 million, where a considerable decrease of 20,000 could be seen. Even the number of those earning over Ft 6 million grew from 112,000 to 138,000 between 2006 and 2007.

Those paying personal income tax grew considerably, by 249,000. While this is partly attributable to the inclusion of pensions, the main reason for this increase is that the minimum wage has been subject to tax since last year.

Total revenue from personal income tax exceeded Ft 1,600 billion.
