Customs and excise authorities arrested eight people last week after uncovering a Ft 1.5 billion tax evasion scheme, spokesman Jenõ Sípos told Magyar Hírlap. Five Hungarians and three Chinese nationals were detained and taken into custody; arrest warrants were issued for two other Chinese women.
The Chinese members of the gang purchased items, mostly clothing, in the Far East, then imported them to Slovakia, where they used forged documents to apply for suspension of VAT payment by declaring that they would pay VAT in Hungary. However, they sold their goods without paying VAT.
Unlicensed firearms, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and Ft 12 million in foreign currency were seized in one of the suspect’s flats, and 10 bank accounts were frozen.
