With the mobile broadband revolution now fully underway, two Index.hu reporters have been roaming the country measuring bandwidth and coverage in various locations, recording the results on a Google map and liveblogging their findings. And their findings were conclusive, although all three providers offer a service comparable to cable or DSL broadband, T-Mobile consistently outperforms the competition for download speeds.
Of Hungary’s three mobile carriers, T-Mobile scores highest in almost every test, with Vodafone coming in second and Pannon a distant third, both in terms of upload and download speed. The highest speed clocked was 4.8 megabits per second in Budapest’s District XVIII with no service dropping out altogether. Subscriptions for HSDPA services are available for under Ft 5,000 (€20) a month and offer comparable performance to fixed line connections, although they are subject to monthly download limits. Proof positive that Internet everywhere is close to becoming a reality.
I didn’t know Tmobile were present on the European
market. I thought Vodafone had most of it and rest
was divided among local national operators.
