District XIV government attempts to block modified Mundo Center plans

Budapest District XIV mayor Leonárd Weinek is leading a fight against construction of the proposed “Mundo Center” on a site behind Bosnyák tér, campaigning for the developer to provide additional community services in addition to those of a shopping mall.

The fight comes after the Polish investor submitted modified plans for the site with the removal of many of the green areas previously approved by the local government.

“We request that Echo Investment and every other company wishing to invest in Zugló to work more closely with the natural environment and architectural surroundings in a credible fashion,” Weinek said at a press conference.

The mayor apparently has the support of other council members, while a press release from Echo Investment expressed its “shock and surprise” at the actions of the politicians.
