Long-shuddered historic Budapest hotel-spa complex to be rebuilt

A historic public bathhouse in central Budapest’s Dohany Street will be rebuilt and is planned to re-open in 2010, daily Nepszava reported on Thursday.

The former Hungaria Bathhouse and Continental Hotel, once located in the same building, are planned to be rebuilt by the Zenia hotel company at a cost of 12 billion forints (EUR 45.9m).

The cold-water Hungaria bathhouse was built in 1827 and was one of the three most important of such institutions in Pest in the 19th century. The popular baths were closed in 1955 due to technical reasons and the hotel was also closed in 1970.

The building became a listed monument in 2005.
