Following hot on the heals of shocking revelations that children as young as 13 were working illegally on Hungary’s M7 motorway, authorities have now uncovered the use of “disappearing ink” to fill out employment books on the M6 project. Labor inspectors also found a total of 217 unregistered employees working at 75% of sub-contractors, reports Index.hu.
The National Labor Protection Authority found a string of irregularities on the construction site between Budapest and Pécs, issuing fines totaling Ft 200 million (€800,000). Some 380 infringements were found, including working hours, compulsory breaks, wages and benefits.
Contractors typically used ink that evaporates when heated to cover their tracks. The technique was discovered when photos of the employment books were compared by returning officers.
