Key Pécs venue unlikely to be completed in time for Capital of Culture programs

The opening of Pécs’s new conference and concert center will be delayed seven months, reports Index.hu. The construction is one of the most important developments related to the European Capital of Culture 2010 project, but now looks unlikely to be ready in time.

The opening of the new Opus2010 Conference and Concert Center was moved from March 15, 2010 to October 27, according to a support contract signed by the city and the National Development Agency (NFÜ). In addition, while earlier documents stated the opening ceremony would be held in March, the new date marks the completion of the technical works. This means it is questionable whether any cultural events can be held at the venue that year, the portal writes.

According to the contract, there will be 75 events held at the center between October 30 and December 31, which will be attended by 60,000 people, including 50,000 paying visitors. The portal thinks this is doubtful, as October is not among the peak tourist months in the city. Moreover, the document also states the venue cannot start operating until weeks or months after the technical opening, as there is usually a need for a period of troubleshooting.

Believe me,if you know the corruption and pathetic infighting of this “red” Pécs,you will realise NOTHING will be ready on time–Hotel projects are on hold, with just huge holes dug for foundations to begin,etc.. The events begin in March 2010, 15 months away, and does anybody think anything will be ready by then ???
A useless EXPO hall lies empty at a cost of millions,a motorway connection that takes a huge detour to reach the city (the real EU aim was to connect Budapest with the Zagreb-Belgrade motorway)
huge shop constructions whilst half the old heart of the city lies empty due to exorbitant council rents, a massive stupid underground garage in the HEART of the main square !! How ludicrous and wasteful.

How can any project with a target date 4 months in, with 15 months to go end up being reforecast yet another 6 months? That’s a slippage of over 25%. Its not the Channel Tunnel, its just a 999 seat auditorium. Any Project Manager worthy of the title would not make this sort of cock up.

Hopefully there are late completion clauses; and we won’t hear 1/2 way through that as they cannot complete it and therefore, to at least salvage the building by making it into a car park.
