About 200 staff at Magyar Suzuki have voluntarily resigned and taken severance packages in light of the company’s plans to make about 1,200 layoffs, the Hungarian unit of Japanese carmaker Suzuki said in a statement on Tuesday.
Magyar Suzuki staff, who wished to remain anonymous, told MTI a week earlier that Magyar Suzuki had offered employees at the plant in Esztergom two month’s pay if they voluntarily resigned by December 18.
Magyar Suzuki said in its statement on Tuesday that the staff who voluntarily resigned would receive their average monthly salary, including allowances, until February 18, as well as their year-end bonus.
Magyar Suzuki said it plans to produce 210,000 cars in 2009, though the figure could change depending on sales in the coming months. The company said it would watch the market closely and review its production plan “on a monthly basis”.
