Old media icon tops Hungary’s new media awards

nolfrontpage.jpgForty-seven of 281 contestants in the 2009 Hungarian “Website of the Year” awards have been presented prizes, reports Kreatív Online. Projects of leading interactive agency Kirowski came in first in two categories while the website of daily newspaper Népszabadság (left) was named winner in the online media category, despite still being in “beta” mode. The Internet Marketing Club (IMK) and the Hungarian Marketing Alliance (MMSZ) organized the ceremony for the seventh time. Websites could be nominated in a total of 14 categories.

Kirowski was voted top in the creative online solutions category for the website it developed for Magyar Telekom’s “Draw with us!” (“Rajzolj velünk!“) campaign, while the agency’s newsletter for Samsung won in the electronic newsletter category.

The winner of the audience’s award was social networking site MyVip.

The largest number of applicants – 38 – were in the service category, where the renewed website of the Budapest Stock Exchange took the top honors, despite the fact that in 2008 most of its users probably wished they had never heard of the BSE.

Have you noticed how the design of the website closely mirrors that of the Guardian in the UK (www.guardian.co.uk). But worse, the new design of the BudapestSun is basically a straight rip off of the Guardian, while the BudapestSun, as everyone knows, is a midget offshoot of the MailGroup in the UK. Shouldn’t someone write the Guardian design team a letter complaining about the copyright theft?

Oh no – because then the New York Times might find out about Caboodle! But seriously, what gets me is how it may turn out that essentially there is one “best” way to design something like a news portal, and then eventually all of them will end up looking the same, forever. Sad! Anyway, both nol.hu and the Sun’s new sites are both much, much easier on the eyes.
