Managing director resigns amid uncertainty about Balaton airport future

Agoston Gubicza, the managing director of Cape Clear Aviation, which operates the FlyBalaton airport (SW Hungary), resigned after the airport’s owners, a group of Irish investors, failed to make the necessary decisions on the successful operation of the airport by the end of 2008, Cape Clear Aviation said in a statement on Tuesday.

“The strategic decisions connected to the operation of the airport are lacking,” Mr Gubicza told MTI, adding that the Cape Clear Aviation’s owners did not meet a request to support a concept for the airport.

A replacement for Mr Gubicza, who has been with the company since it was established in 2004, will be found in January, the company’s statement said.

FlyBalaton temporarily closed at the end of November after Ryanair removed its London flight from the airport from its winter timetable as part of a global measure, citing low passenger numbers, high kerosene costs and the effects of the global economic crisis.

FlyBalaton served about 120,000 passengers in 2008, up from 110,000 in 2007.

Cape Clear Aviation received the rights to operate the airport near Lake Balaton from the local councils of Zalavar and Sarmellek for a period of 99 years in 2004. The company spent about HUF 2bn on developments at the site.
