Ft 6 billion tender for “European Capital of Culture” project declared invalid

The local council of Pecs (SW Hungary) has declared a tender to build a HUF 6bn conference and concert centre – one of the main projects in the city’s preparations to take the European Capital of Culture title in 2010 – invalid after no bids were submitted, the latest issue of the Public Procurement Gazette reveals.

The tender was declared invalid already on December 12, but the official announcement was made only now.

The more than 13,000-square-metre centre, to be built with EU subsidies, is to have two conference halls, a concert hall with a capacity to seat 1,000 people, a completely outfitted stage and a 70-register organ.

What a surprise ! The EKF 2010 project goes from worse to worse under this useless council.
Maybe nobody could afford the “backhanders” necessary to get on the tender list !!
Can we still expect it to open in October 2010 (originally Jan 2010 )??

My solution,do not build the fucking useless white elephant, nobody wants it in Pécs anyway.

Interesting how the last time this was reported (16 Dec) it said that the project was 6 months behind schedule and now we hear that what was really happening is that the public procurement process didn’t even get a bid.

    So the questions are:-

. how could they say it would be 4 months late if nobody was ever intending to build it? (I’d have thought the headline should have been – delayed indefinitely)

. it’s now 1 month later, does that mean the work will be completed 1 month later too? And if so, will they now squeeze 70 events into 1 month – before 2010 ends.

. if this is how HU does with a minor project, should HU even bother to mention its interested in hosting things like the European Cup?

It will be a far longer delay, because a new tender will need to be issued and returned (usually 3 months minimum) and the processed before issuing a contract.
    Forget 2010, maybe mid-2011 (am I dreaming again ??)
