Hungary new car sales drop more than 10%

New car sales in Hungary fell 10.4pc to 158,628 in 2008, and light commercial vehicle sales were flat, the Hungarian Association of Vehicle Importers (MGE) told MTI on Wednesday.

LCV sales dropped less than 1pc to 23,917 in 2008, though sales in the under-2.5-tonne category were up 9.7pc. Sales of vehicles over 3.5 tonnes dropped 1.1pc to 7,324. Within the category, bus sales plunged 35.3pc.

Suzuki sales dropped 16.9pc to 26,824, but the car maker continued to lead the market with a share of 16.9pc, down from 18.2pc in 2007.

Sales of Opels slipped 11.4pc to 17,650. The company’s market share dropped to 11.1pc from 11.4pc

Ford sales fell 6.0pc to 17,239. Its market share narrowed to 10.9pc from 10.4pc.

Hungarians bought 13,557 Volkswagens, down 9.7pc, but the German car maker guarded its market share of 8.5pc.

Skoda sales fell 20.0pc to 11,500. Skoda’s market share shrank to 7.2pc from 8.1pc.

Sales of Subarus jumped 49.2pc to 379, but still accounted for just 0.2pc of the market. Mazda sales rose 38.3pc to 3,150, giving the Japanese car maker a 2.0pc market share. Audi sales climbed 18.9pc to 2,050, boosting the company’s market share to 1.3pc.
