Agriculture minister heralds major changes to farming in 2009

2009 will bring major changes to Hungary’s farm industry, Jozsef Graf, the agriculture minister told MTI on Saturday.

Big investment projects will be carried out in animal farming this year, and European Union funding will support the modernisation of infrastructure, Graf said at the agriculture and food trade Grune Woche in Berlin.

“This will create the foundations for the future of Hungarian agriculture,” he said.

Around 350 billion forints (EUR 1.3 bn) of support will be granted, whereas the actual amount invested sum is expected to be twice this sum, he added.

The organisers of Grune Woche have selected Hungary as next year’s guest country, Graf noted.

Graf told MTI that efforts had been made during the week to promote the Hungary’s position on goose liver producers, after a recent campaign by Austrian animal rights activists.

“We are doing everything in our power to protect Hungarian producers and prove to the world that these products are made in full compliance with EU regulations and animal protection laws,” Graf said.

  1. Ricsi says:

In other words the destruction of Hungarian farming heritage in favour of big agro-producers who care not about the land or quality, only quantity and profit.
Graf of course will speak highly for he has a 16,000 hectare land holding and is awaiting EU support for his pig ‘factory farm’ project. Talk about biased opinions !
