Building contractors get suspended sentences in tax evasion case

The Szeged appeals court has handed down suspended sentences to three building contractors found guilty of multiple counts of tax evasions totaling Ft 88 million, index.hu reports.

Two of contractors hired builders illegally and collected fake invoices from non-existing companies, and improperly used the names of other existing ones while working on the refurbishment of the Budapest Novotel.

The duo were found guilty of causing damages totaling Ft 80 million to the state and were slapped with 1-2 year suspended prison sentences and fines of a combined 11 million.

The third contractor was found guilty of evading Ft 8 million in taxes and was fined Ft 800,000. The sentences are partially binding.
