Hungarian tax office APEH on Tuesday said it would not change the focus of its audits this year but would continue to target newly established businesses, taxpayers that report minimal income and profit, private individuals who quickly acquire wealth, and illegal workers.
The audits are meant to give an incentive to honest taxpayers and a disincentive to dishonest ones, APEH chief Janos Szikora said. The other aim is to bring in budget revenue.
APEH uncovered HUF 468bn in unpaid taxes in the course of more than 300,000 audits completed in 2008.
The delinquent taxpayers had to pay HUF 304bn in fines.
