Hungarian start-up Joobili.com (pronounced “Jubilee”) will travel to Warsaw on March 18 to compete as a finalist in Seedcamp’s Central-Eastern European start-up competition. Joobili is a new travel inspiration website that uses trip dates to suggest festivals and other time-sensitive travel experiences across Europe.
Seedcamp is a series of annual competitions organized by some of Europe’s leading investors and entrepreneurs whose previous projects include Skype and Bebo among others. The goal is to connect promising European entrepreneurs with the mentors, networks and financial capital needed to achieve success. Only the 20 best start-ups are invited to Warsaw and Joobili is the only finalist from Hungary.
With stories of layoffs and bankruptcies dominating the business news, Joobili’s success represents a bright spot in an otherwise gloomy business environment. “We are optimistic,” says co-founder Tamas Gabor. “Believe it or not, the financial crisis has actually helped us in many ways. I think a lot of people are happy to see that some businesses out there are moving forward, they’re cheering for us.”
Joobili began as an MBA entrepreneurship project at the CEU Business School in Budapest where co-founders Jared Salter and Tamas Gabor met. In 2008, Joobili received seed funding from notable investor Esther Dyson (Flickr, Dopplr, Technorati, Orbitz, etc.) and local investor Hamu és Gyémánt.
Joobili’s emphasis on timing differentiates it from other travel sites oriented around destinations and activities. Co-founder Jared Salter notes, “Oftentimes I don’t even know where I want to go, all I know is when I have an upcoming holiday weekend. With Joobili you just enter your travel dates and get inspired.”
Early partners include private event promoters and European city and national tourism organizations.
