Mixed results for Budapest tourism campaign

The “Budapest Winter Invitation” tourism promotion campaign has been deemed a success, as the number of guests in the city was up 5% year-on-year between November 1, 2008 and March 31, 2009, state tourism promotion agency Magyar Turizmus said.

“Spend an additional night in Budapest” was the main slogan, offering a gratis night after two or three nights booked in hotels. The number of hotel guests increased from 50,000 to 53,000, short of the target of 60,000.

The campaign cost Ft 255 million, of which Magyar Turizmus provided Ft 220 million. The remainder came from 65 hotels, Budapest Airport and participating restaurants and airlines.

Sorry to put a bit of a downer on their campaign but don’t you think the Forint exchange rate plummeting towards the abyss may have more to do with the increase in tourism?

The 50.000 hotel guests are based on last years numbers? Well expecting 10k more but achiving only 3k more is not a too good number.
