Inflation-adjusted wages stagnate as public sector pay drops

Gross wages rose 4.3pc in the twelve months to March 2009 and net wages were up 3.3pc, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) said on Tuesday.

January-March 2009 gross wages were down 0.3pc and net wages increased 0.2pc from a year earlier.

Calculated with 2.9pc inflation in March and 3.0pc in the first quarter, real wages remained level with March 2008 and Q1 last year.

In Q1 gross wages rose 3.4pc in the business sector and fell 7.3pc in the public sector. Gross wages in March rose 3.3pc at businesses and dropped 0.5pc yr/yr in the public sector.
