Russian holiday homebuyers flock to Hungarian spa towns

Zala county and its numerous spa towns are becoming an increasingly popular target of Russian home buyers, who are snapping up properties in the area like never before, Világgazdaság reports.

The most favored towns are Hévíz, Gyenesdiás, Vonyarcvashegy and Zalakaros, where Russians are buying houses, weekend homes as well as undeveloped plots to build their own.

According to local statistics, while only eight out of the total 250 property ownership applications in the county were filed by Russian citizens in 2007, the numbers jumped to 46 last year and was half of that in the first four months of this year alone. While most of them spend only a few weeks in Hungary, many are willing to spend up to Ft 150 million to buy a home.
