The summer does not look too bright for Hungary’s tourism sector with the number of guests in accommodation falling over the first five months of the year, business daily Vilaggazdasag said on Tuesday.
The number of guests in Hungary went down by 12.2 percent to 2.3 million in January-May, compared to the same period in 2008, and the number of guest nights spent in accommodation dropped by 14.1 percent to 5.5 million, the paper said, quoting figures by the Central Statistical Office.
The drop was even sharper, 17 percent, in the number of foreign guests in accommodation during the first five months, said the paper. Even the weakening of the forint against the euro could not offset that decline in foreign guest numbers, the paper said.
It noted that the number of tourists arriving from the most important sending countries — Germany, Romania, Britain and Italy — dropped. There was a decline of 33 percent in the number of guest nights spent by British guests alone during the period, compared to an upward trend a year earlier.
The hotel industry, as a result, reported 78 billion forints (EUR 285 m) in revenues in January-May, down 12 percent on a year earlier.
“We already felt the effects of the global economic crisis last autumn and now expect the decline to continue,” the president of the Hungarian Hotel Association, Andrea Kopocsy told the paper. She said that hotels had reported a low number of advanced bookings for July and August and practically no bookings for business events for September and October.
Oh thank god. There is good in the crisis. Particularly that the Brits (English) are staying away. They are even worse tourists than the Americans. Maybe people will come here now because they are interested in the country, not for the cheaper beer and cheap flights.
And in a tourism slump, why are more hotels being built and financed?
It would be great if everyone stayed away so real Hungarians can support Hungary. I am sure the tourism industry wouldn’t miss the revenue if we all just started doing our part like spending 4 or 5 nights in a downtown hotel or eating at TG. Sure that would almost be a full months salary but at least we can show what we can do if we try. Come on gang, let’s prove to them what real Hungarians can do!
@Hot Paprika: sarcasm intended?!
Hot Parika impersonators are on the loose today.
Ugly retards with no personality of their own.
“FREELOADING FOREIGNERS, STAY HOME!!!”
(NEW TOURISM POSTER APPROVED BY THE JOBBIK PARTY.)
Tünde, the main difference between English tourists and American torurists may be that the English tourists are screaming loudly at night as they are urinating all drunked-up in an alley or underpass, while the typical Yankee tourist usually keeps rather quiet and does his/her business in a WC. No?
Frankoferko: As dumbed down that Americans tend to be (they cannot help it, it is their system) I find them less arrogant, and more open to learn about other cultures (not the ones running this site) than Brits. Brits (English) just come to get drunk and watch football. I would say for sex too, but I think they are all impotent.
Urinating in the street is no big deal. And if they do it in an alley or underpass, then fine. Hungarians shocked Americans by doing urinating in the street at the turn of the last century.
Dog droppings and vomit are much worse.
Who left the asylum’s front door open?
You were the last one to leave…
So sorry for that, my bad. But I could have sworn that Tünde was right behind me….
If you charge western prices, they will vacation in the west and farther east and will be happy to do it. Italian beaches, German Chic’s, and the Black Sea resorts are more affordable in current comparison. Air fare inclusive!
Tünde, you jsut don’t KNOW much, do you now? You said:
“Particularly that the Brits (English) are staying away. They are even worse tourists than the Americans.”
Whereas this report just came out today:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/31827905/ns/travel-seasonal/
updated 9:21 a.m. ET, Thurs., July 9, 2009
“PARIS – French tourists are the worst in the world, coming across as bad at foreign languages, tight-fisted and arrogant, according to a survey of 4,500 hotel owners across the world.
They finish in last place in the survey carried out for internet travel agency Expedia by polling company TNS Infratest.
The Japanese ranked top of the Best Tourist survey, with the British and the Germans judged the best of the Europeans.”
Let’s see now: “Tünde the Magnificient” says that the Brits are the worse tourists. A reputable survey states exactly the opposite. Apparently, they are the BEST. Wow!!!
Who is right, I wonder? Oh, I’ve got it: Tünde is. Of course.
Maybe Brits are the worse tourists in Hungary.
Obviously the “reputable” survey was not conducted here. You lose again…
Let’s see the Ass_hole Godot’s warped logic:
It says here: “the British and the Germans judged the best of the Europeans.”
Ass_hole Godot states that this means that the Brits are the WORSTS tourists in Hungary.
But this could only hold true if Hungary was NOT part of Europe.
But since Hungary IS a part of Europe, the Brits (and Germans) are the “best tourists” there as well, whatever that really means.
Incidentally, A_h Godot, how do YOU know for a fact that of the 5,000 hoteliers polled, none of them were in Hungary, huh?
Should have kept your trap door in the “shut and closed” position, perhaps?
“Urinating in the street is no big deal. And if they do it in an alley or underpass, then fine.”
They say when in Rome, do as the Romans do!
Furkoferko,
If you weren’t a complete retard, you could figure out on your own that Hungary gets the worst of the pile. Which means EU results may don’t apply here.
Look up a study on average EU wages vs. taxes, then compare it to the Hungarian results. Even you’ll notice the difference there. It’s pretty much the same with tourists and other things.
Now apologize to Mr. Godot, and be on your way.
Anon, let me introduce you to one of my favorite body parts. You know, the one situated midsection, to the rear. All righty, then?
Just who are you, little nobody of a nothing, to question the validity of a travel survey commissioned by Expedia and conducted by one of the most respected polling entities? A real nobody, that’s who you are), buddy.
Since Hungary is a member nation of the stupid EU, everything that happens in the EU also happens in Hungary, Jerk. The EU should be happy that former East Block Iron Curtain nations have agreed to be member states of the sinking ship SS Europe, don’t you get it, Fool?
Now, be a good little nothing and apologize to Frankferko and to the entire readership of this great web site RealDeal.hu, you ingratiate, you.
furkoferko is so stupid, he think that by joining the EU, Hungary will be on the same level as the rest. We get the same living standards overnight as Germany or Austria, etc.
Get real, the Balaton is not the Riviera, the Romai Part is not Rome.
Statistics lump together the best with the worst and give you the “average”. Hungary would love to be the average, but it’s not even close. Get it now?
Hello, Anon “Lick-Boy.”
“By joining the EU, Hungary will be on the same level as the rest.”
MY TAKE: Well, maybe not the same as the rest… only BETTER?
“We get the same living standards overnight as Germany or Austria, etc.”
MY TAKE: Well, Hungarians probably already live better overall than the miser Krauts and Nazi-symphetizer Austrians. But keep going, Anus-Anon, as you apparently think you are on a roll here. Well…. are ya’?
“Get real, the Balaton is not the Riviera, the Romai Part is not Rome.”
MY TAKE: Not, it is not. For starters, the ‘Riviera’ is a sea coast, and ‘Balaton’ is the name of a lake. Duuuh!!!
Also, ‘Romai’ has got nothing to do with ‘Roma.’
Good points overall, I suppose. Do you have any more like this, Anon-Moron?
“Hungary would love to be the average, but it’s not even close. Get it now?”
MY TAKE: Oh, I do indeed. In re-reading the article that you are commenting on here, nothing in it states specifically that “Hungary would love to be the average,” or anything even resembling that sentiment.
Just where do you come up with this crazy sh_it then, Buddy?
