President returns act on unfair trade practices to Parliament

President Laszlo Solyom has returned an act that defines and establishes sanctions for unfair trade practises to Parliament for reconsideration.

Mr Solyom asked in a letter to House Speaker Katalin Szili whether it was necessary to have a separate law to clamp down on unfair business practises. He said the language of the act had not been thought through and contained legal inconsistencies, and added that it would probably not achieve its stated goal. Instead of protecting Hungarian food industry suppliers, it could cause retailers and wholesalers to turn to foreign suppliers, he said.

Parliament passed the act with a unanimous vote on June 29.
