Hungary’s OTP Bank, together with MasterCard, will issue the first PayPass “contactless” bank cards in Hungary, the bank and the card company said in Budapest on Thursday.
OTP Bank plans to issue 15,000 PayPass cards this year, said deputy-CEO Antal Kovacs. The number of points of sale where they can be used will reach 350 by the end of October, he added.
The cards can be tapped by holders at checkouts with PayPass terminals for purchases up to HUF 3,000, speeding up the payment process. Terminals will first be available at fast food restaurants, cafes, movie theatres and paper stores in Budapest.
Hope it is a fast system. Nothing worse than standing in Match trying to get a pack of smokes and three people ahead of you buying loaves of bread with their Visa card.

Re. these “PayPass” cards, they tried these things in the United States a few years ago, but I am not even sure if the thing is still being used, as most “early adopters” have turned them back in to the issuers. Two problems have occured in the process:
(1) There were plenty of inadvertent charges, when somehow or the other the crad got wiped, allegedly by the card owner, even though there was no real intent on the card owner’s part to use the card and make a purchase.
(2) Many folks had the small version of the cards on their keychains. All that was necessary was to leave the keys someplace, next thing they knew someone had charged up the card to the limit.
Since there are no signatures required, guess what: whether you make an unintended swipe or someone gets access to your plastic some way, it is the card’s “owner” who must pay.
Easy money and mininmal adminsitration for the c.c. issuers, a nightmare for the customers. No wonder that Hungo banks are jumping on the bandwagon!
