Parliament voted yesterday to make it more difficult for foreigners to purchase arable land in Hungary, by requiring potential buyers to obtain approval from agricultural authorities. The proposal had multi-party support.
At present, foreigners wishing to buy arable land are required to present a Tax Authority certificate confirming that they have been engaged in farming in Hungary for three years and pay relevant taxes. In the future, a supporting proposal from the agricultural authorities will also be required.
An estimated 700,000 hectares in Hungary are farmed by Austrians and many German and Dutch farmers are also present.
The Chamber of Agriculture has identified 14 ways in which foreigners want to obtain ownership of land when the market opens to them after 2011.
So you can only become a farmer if you’ve already
been a farmer for 3 years. Excellent concept. I

Hungarians don’t like farming (young people go to
the cities for work). Most farms are small and run-
down and totally enviable from an economic POV.
Hungary desperately needs exports (you can’t cure
the economy by continuously cutting back) and it
needs its farm bought up to speed, with modern
management and technology if its going to be
competitive. As an aside, just as Syd Barrett’s
creation (on the excellent “Saucer full of Secrets”)
pointed out, EU competition laws will save the day.

Here is the scenario unfolding. The hungarian government was on the verge of collapse/currency crisis/etc. The banks were going bust because people wreent paying their loans. So….the IMG loaned hungarian banks/ hungarian government several billion $’s to pay back the loans. in return….the IMF demands total control of agriculture, textiles, public works, large scale industry. Many of these entities will be closed down once they are acquired to reduce competition. The loans have to be paid back to the banks and the IMF represents the “bill collector” for nations.
