Domestic DIY firms unite to compete with multinationals

Sixteen Hungarian home-improvement companies have established a purchasing association in order to compete with major multinational peers such as Germany’s OBI, Praktiker and Bauhaus, Austria’s Baumax and France’s Bricostore the business daily Vilaggazdasag reported on Wednesday.

The latter big companies together command 55pc-60pc of Hungary’s estimated HUF 300bn (EUR 1.12bn) home-improvement market,

CEO Peter Bak of association member Ezermester Magyar Barkacs Kft said that the association is in talks with 40 more Hungarian home-improvement companies about joining the organization.

The newspaper reported that some 200 home-improvement stores operating in and around Budapest and 8,000-9,000 in all of Hungary.

    This is a fantastic development! Small Hungarian companies have to find more ways to leverage on their collective presence and assets. They still need to remember that they also have to compete among themselves to give the best value to their customers even with such purchasing organisations.
