EC calls on Hungary to change vehicle registration tax

The European Commission on Thursday said it has called on Hungary to change its legislation on car registration tax as it continues to discriminate against buyers of second-hand cars from other member states.

Hungary’s Parliament earlier amended legislation that taxed used cars imported from other member states at 100pc of their original value, while taxing the original value minus depreciation for used vehicles purchased in Hungary. The amended tax takes into account depreciation of vehicles purchased in other member states, but the depreciation is measured only in terms of age.

Consequently, cars from other members states whose value has depreciated more than the average will be taxed at a higher rate than similar ones purchased in Hungary, the Commission said.

If Hungary fails to comply with the Commission’s reasoned opinion, the matter could be brought to the European Court of Justice.

The Finance Ministry said late Thursday that it would take a stand on the matter only after it is informed in writing of the Commission’s decision.

listen or they (EU) go to court, their own court ofcourse …..another example of total control of the EU (a foreign power) over Hungary…..

  2. Jan says:

    Geza,
If Hungary didn’t plan on opening up to EU markets then why did they join? It is primarily an economic union after all. Hungarians welcome the export opportunities but don’t accept the other side of the coin? And normal Hungarians would even benefit from cheaper German cars…it’s the Hungarian used-car industry that’s preventing it.

  3. Karman says:

With member countries like Hungaria, is it any wonder the nobody in the whole wide world takes the already fully discedited, bumbling EU seriously?

  4. david says:

Jan.Do not hold your breath while you wait for a
cheap German car. This has dragged on for more than
    four years now.

  5. Karman says:

@david, all you have to do is do nothing and just wait patiently for four more eyars, and by then Hunagria and the EU will surely overtake China in everything. Sure thing, everything will be really cheap by then.

  6. david says:

@Carmen. No need to repeat me. That was my point. That is why i said – do not hold your breath. Anyway, should you not be out scuba diving or something?

  7. Karman says:

Att. david — you really and truly are an idiot. You knwo that too, right? Just who the hell are YOU, little meddling fool, to tell everyone else what they should be doing and for how long they should be holding their breath whilst they are buying cars or scuba diving?

What a troll you really are, david. I guess all of your ‘admirers’ here cannot be collectively wrong about you.

  8. klimax says:

And why Hungary stays in this lousy Union, wich takes all her money and gives nothing to magyars, only exploitation? I will tell you! Because of these people in power up there! They sold a lot of our country to those lubric vipers in Strasburg, and they have to be brought to justice! Next: get out of this lousy union, everythig will be better in Magyarorsag! I am sure that majority of magyars want the same.

  9. Rudi says:

Yeah, right on. And throw out the foreigners. Burn
some books. Gas the jews. Run the roma out. Take
back our stolen lands. And then Hungarians will live
and breathe the clean Hungarian air again in
    prosperity and happiness.

  10. Gyuszi G. says:

@klimax, of course we all know that the EU is a useless, absurd institution. It could only have been dreamt-up and then put into practice on the most absurd continent of Franz Kafka, after all.

It was dreamt up by a a single Frog in the 19th Century, and then many decades later the Krauts have also jumped on the idea, so basically the EU is a Frog-Kraut (i.e. French-German) joint operation that needs the other nations to tag along as well.

No people have voted for this idiotic EU, and if there would be free elections held about it today, it may even be that the majority of the French and Germans would also want to kill it off for good.

BTW, if what you say is true and Hungary pays into the EU coffers more than it gets out of it, then it is really the fault of the Hungarians and not of the EU. I am not defending the EU or anything, but as long as you are a member state, it might be worthwhile to learn the myriad of EU rules and abide by them, no?

  11. klimax says:

You agreed that EU robs our country of lots of money without giving nothing in exchange excepting buraucrats playing like censors and NGOs for “human rights”. Because of the EU Magyars accepted all foreigners here making anything but scandals and taking money elsewhere?

Dont you see that these are the rules for them? Why bothering with them? The next government, if responsible, must have another referendum about remaining in EU. You will see, our country will not be there any more, and things will go much better here!!!

  12. Rudi says:

Guys, try to get your facts right (assuming you
care about facts rather than speculation and
    scaremongering).

    1) Hungarian voters voted to join the EU in a
referendum in 2003, with 84% voting yes. Only 46%
of the electorate voted, indicating the majority
of voters didn’t give a hoot either way.

    2) Hungary receives much more from EU than it puts
in. In fact considerably more than the other EU
newcomers that joined at the same time a few years
    ago.

    Figures to 2007 are at
    http://www.eu-oplysningen.dk/euo_en/spsv/all/79/

In fact Germany is far and away the biggest net
contributor and France isn’t far behind. So
perhaps their voters would vote to pull out, given
    the chance!

  13. Gyuszi G. says:

@Rudi: you are amazing, man, telling others to ‘get their facts right,’ all the while you are cooking the books, so to speak.

When something like 46% of all eligible voters cast their vote in any particular election, it does NOT mean that the remaining 54% of eligibible voters who did not actually vote did not vote because they ‘didn’t give a hoot either way.’

They just did not vote, can’t you even see the difference?

I am rather dubious that Hungary in fact receives much from EU than it puts in to the potty, let alone “much more.” This must be some other propagande you had come across, maybe also based on a so-called “survey” done by MTI-ECONEWS? They are not exactly the Gallop Survey, you know what I mean, Rudi?

  14. Rudi says:

    G, if a person doesn’t vote, then they can’t
complain about the result. If they don’t care enough
to vote, then they obviously don’t care about the
    outcome.

Please show some stats to backup your theory.
Otherwise don’t shoot down the ones I found, which
according to the page (which looks reputable) come
    from the EU commission.

By the way, I believe a Gallop survey is an
    *opinion* poll.

  15. Gyuszi G. says:

Okay, Rudi. You’ve got me. The MTI-Econews “surveys” and “polls” are the world’s best designed and most reputable. Forget the Yanks and the other low-lives doing obviously flawed surveys, eh?.

“some stats… I found, which looks reputable come
    from the EU commission.”

Wow, Rudi. You found “some stats” about the EU that were made by the EU, and they are reputable exactly because they were made by the EU and not by an uninterested, neutral third-party entity!?

How simple, how elegant of a methodology, wow!!! Just use the internal data blindly and forget about external oversight. Of course, should have thought about this simple option myself!

  16. Rudi says:

Well, G, my friend, first of all, you still
haven’t offered any alternative stats. And why
wouldn’t the EU publish reputable stats, given
that the countries involved would presumably
complain if the figures were noticably incorrect.
And last, do you know (if) a third party provides
better data than the EU’s own – if so, please say
    who.

As for MTI-Econews, you introduced their name, not
me – they are not mentioned in the page I linked
so I haven’t a clue what you are talking about.

Anyway, I only tried to introduce some
    objectivity. Previous posts made certain
statements which out of curiosity I attempted to
validate or invalidate, and so far the data I’ve
found – flawed or otherwise – invalidates those
claims. Please offer some alternative data if you
know it, since you made some of those statements
    after all!

  17. klimax says:

Whats with nonsense in fact? We all know that Magyars dont want EU and EU with all its absurd rules!!! You can ask much more serious men about realities in tis country. Did EU create jobs, or preserved national wealth, or give things Hungary needs? When they talked to us about so-called “freedom of circulation”, and all other stupid “freedoms”, what we had here? Imigrants from all over Europe taking jobs from young talented people trained in Hungary! Enough with these “surveys” payd by the same people who steel from us so many money! We dont sell our country!!!

  18. Gyuszi G. says:

Hello, Rudi. You ask “why wouldn’t the EU publish reputable stats, given that the countries involved would presumably complain if the figures were noticably incorrect?”

MY DIRECT ANSWER: Seem like you hadn’t really been around the block yet, Rudi, had you now?

“As for MTI-Econews… I haven’t a clue what you are talking about.”

MY SUGGESTION: Do this, Rudi. Look up to the top portion of this page, and tell me what you see under the words “EC calls on Hungary to change vehicle registration tax.” Anything, anything at all?

@klimax: you’ve said it, brother. But beware, your position will not be too popular on these here pages. Many of the assorted Wester riff-raff invested in the Hungarian status quo will undountedly attack you and label you a right-wing Jobbi Party Fascist-Nazi fanatic…. or worse.

  19. Rudi says:

Juicy G, I love pulling your dong. It’s ringing
louder than evah. And klimax takes even bigger BS
than you do. Immigrants taking jobs from
Hungarians? WTF? Anyway most Hungarians are so
    f*cking lazy it wouldn’t be a surprise.

  20. Anonymous says:

@Rudi: at long last, you finally admit it openly, that “I love pulling your dong.”

But of course you do, Dearie. And you do it so well, I might add. Hold up for a jerkie second — let me get a fresh box of Kleenex before you continue, okay?

The rest of your diatribe is old, dried-up sheite. Hardly worth the time analyzing, let alone responding to.

  21. simp says:

And now, when EU is shaking, when the treatise will not be signed by anybody, it is not clear enough that Hungary has to get out of it as soon as possible? It is a matter of national emmergency! Croatia rennounced to be blackmailed with the EU membership, Czech Republic said no on tuesday, Turkey does not want EU… So Hungary has to go out of EU, even if the referendum has to be called next week!!! But here, in these pages, I see that people praising patriotic forces do not have real connections to them! Arise, proud Hungarians, a great danger awaits you!!!

  22. Gyuszi G. says:

Unfortunately, Hungoland has got about as much chance of extricating herself from the yolk of the torturous EU as as she has getting approved by US President B. Hussein Obama for 51st statehood of the Union. It just ain’t gonna happen, alas.

I also feel that since NATO is just about to self-destruct, Moscow should resurrect the Warsaw Pact and entice membership to the East Block (err, excuse me, “former East Block”) nations. Use the carrot and not the stick. Couldn’t be worse than the NATO mayhem and ineptitude going on in Afghanland & elsewhere.

  23. Anonymous says:

simp, “Czech Republic said no on tuesday, Turkey
does not want EU”. Eh? Czech APPROVED the Lisbon
    treaty the other day.
00144feabdc0.html) Do you read the news? Can you
read at all? As for Turkey, they are trying and
trying but the EU doesn’t seem to want them. That’s
the first I heard about them not wanting the EU. Can
you provide some basis for this.

As for you, Juicy, you’re like a little juicy fish
waiting for the bait. Easy to catch. Ding dong.

  24. Rudi says:

And as for the Hungarian people rising up, simp,
great idea. You’re good at rising up, aren’t you.
At least it will result in yet another public
holiday to celebrate yet another failed revolution.

The only thing the Hungarian people are any good at
rising up for is to get to the ABC at 6am before the
    bread sells out.

  25. Gandalf the greyer says:

Those of you who claim that most Hungarians want out
of the EU, have a look at this http://www.politics.hu/20091104/intl-

    Quote:
Asked about views on the European Union, Hungarians

Thank you Lord, the Almighty Allah, that I do not have to live in freak-show edition Europa, continent of the overpriced and undersized everything.

  27. david says:

@Exfit Ham. Yes indeed, we all must thank your God that you do not live in Hungary or even this continent.

  28. Expat Hun says:

@david, top o’ de morning to U, 2. Gotcha! Of course, it’s only late evening here, Fool!

Yes indeed, I must thank my God, Allah the Magnificient, that I do not have to live in miserable, downtrodden, no-future, no-prospects Hungary, or even on the same crowded n’ derelict ancient-regime continent where Magyarland is situated. Got all that now, Bozobird?

Some guys got all the great breaks, eh? Life just ain’t fair for the rest of them, huh?

  29. Dix says:

As usual, starting from a absurd car tax… the discussion has been moved to racism.

I have been living in Hungary since 3 years, but often working abroad, I liked this country and I decided to live here…
Hoped to find “normal” people , friendly as my first colleagues, but I discovered that it is not so simple.

I only think that if us, “foreigners”, were not living and spending money in this country, maybe it would be already got by the russian…
Even if the governament is playing the game of keeping on the Ft, every market knows that is not the reality.
The only reason is due to the Swiss franc loans which they agreed to put on market, which would destroy the entire “liable” economy…
reducing even their capabilities to buy abroad.
I am sorry for all these matters, Hungary could be great and important but, people only prefer to remember “GREAT HUNGARY” instead of making socrifices and start up a new life, like every other european countries did after the 2nd World War.
“Everything and Now” this is the Motto.
For what? if you cannot think to the future…
Do not live into the past but … think of what you could have.
EC is a nightmare for everybody, apart the politicians, everywhere in Europe is the same, but countries like Hungary, Slovakia, and Czek got a lot of advantanges. For sure not the worker… but the big Power.
You teached to the world the “Art” of revolution… but where it is now that Soul?
only aggressive words, and no facts.

I opine that to receive the credit loans from creditors you ought to have a firm motivation. Nevertheless, one time I’ve got a sba loan, just because I wanted to buy a house.

  31. American in Budapest says:

    Klimax and Gyursi,

You’re idiots. Your poor country needs every penny it can get.

You indulge in brain dead babble about what the magyars think …

It was the Magyars who alienated the other peoples making up the Hungarian half of the ‘Empire’ and led Hungary to dissolution. .

Those same intolerant Magyars then targeted the Jews in the 20s and 30s because they couldn’t compete with them. Quotas on University admissions. Later fascism.

So you fight on the losing side in two world wars and help the Nazis wipe out the Jews, who were collectively the commercial backbone of the country, and you really think people are going to respect what the Magyars think …

  32. Pesa says:

I get very concerned when I read nationalist e-mails from Hungarians.
Hungary is a very small country, although I think it is incredibly beautiful, and cannot possibly survive on its own in this world.
Hungary DOES take more from the EU than it puts in, which is how it should be as it is a new member.
As a few posts here say, if such a small number of Hungarians choose to vote, then they only have themselves to blame if they are unhappy with the results.
I have been visiting Hungary since the 1970′s and am dissapointed with what HUNGARIANS are doing to their own country, never mind the ‘foreigners’, your country creates beautiful buildings and monuments only for HUNGARIANS to vandalise them, new railway stations (Ferihegy 1) only for locals to smash up.
You have a bunch of brainless thugs marching through the streets in ugly uniforms and intimidating everyone, the GARDA, what kind of signals does this send to potential tourists wishing to come and visit and spend money in YOUR Country.
Get a grip and deal with your own problems and stop blaming everyone else.
