Study confirms Hungary’s continuing domination of regional biotech sector

Hungary continues dominates the biotechnology sector in the region, writes napi.hu, based on a survey by EuropaBio and Venture Valuation. The survey was conducted in the twelve countries that recently joined the European Union, plus Turkey and Croatia.

The survey featured 260 biotech firms, the bulk of which are based in Hungary, Poland, Estonia and the Czech Republic. Of the more than 10,000 individuals employed in the center, about 1,900 works in R&D. The majority of the companies are involved in general research and manufacturing, 20% are in diagnostics and 19% do analytics. Bioinformatics is rapidly getting stronger, although it is currently only at 8%.

In Hungary, more than a 1,000 people are employed at 77 companies, with 40% of those employees working in R&D. Diagnostic and analytic researches are dominant, but general research and bioinformatics are also strong.
