National Bank chief says Hungary should speed through ERM-2 to euro

Hungary should spend as little time as possible in the ERM-2, the anteroom to the eurozone, before adopting the single currency in order to reduce vulnerability to attacks on the forint, National Bank of Hungary governor Andras Simor said at a conference on Monday.

Hungary should join the European Monetary Union as soon as possible, “if it is on track to meeting convergence criteria”, Mr Simor said. Otherwise the country could become more vulnerable, he added.

I think this is a congratulations to Mr Simor for scoring maximum points on his specialist knowledge round “The Bleeding Obvious”.

I surprised he didn’t say Hungary should try to have positive economic growth, a stable economy and attact global investment. Perhaps he is saving those gems for the Mastermind final?

@JD: To be fair to Simor it’s a bit more complicated/technical than that… From what I gather, he’s suggesting that Hungary not rush getting into ERM-2 even if we meet the criteria, and instead wait until there is no doubt of a speedy graduation right into the euro. It’s a serious issue with big tradeoffs.

Andras Simor the man who had all is “readies” stashed away in faraway Cyprus?
Like so many of the so-called “leading lights”
in Hungary – governor Simor Andras is, in fact, a
    damp squib.
Hungary’s future is in the hands of the IMF, Euro-bureuucrats and other assorted faceless clerks that make, and take, the decisions which directly affect this country. Euro days are not that far off, I think…. hmmmmmmmmmm
