Fidesz considers the planned construction of an underground garage below Kossuth tér illegal, deputy chairman László Papcsák of Budapest city council’s public procurement committee said yesterday.
As the square is a public area, any project built under it should also be public, he argued, whereas the investor has declared it a private area. The agreement on the project and its use should be voided and the Ft 6 billion project stopped, he said.
Zoltán Gyarmati, chief executive of Parking Kft., which will build the garage, told Népszabadság that no legal concerns may be raised as both the Mayor’s Office and Parliament’s Office have examined the project, and two law firms and an international law firm have found no problems. The garage will be transferred to the city of Budapest and the property will not be mortgaged in any way, he said.
