New tax calculator makes it easier for APEH to come after you

ado-calculator.jpgWhile an online calculator to be launched by tax office APEH to help taxpayers calculate the “wealth tax” is useful, they might want to think twice about using it. As various tax advisors informed vg.hu, taxpayers who use the online calculator are far more likely to receive a visit from APEH. Tax advisors recommended that once a taxpayer uses the online form to calculate the amount of the tax that they owe, they should not change any of those numbers as it would raise eyebrows at the national tax authority. They stressed that this is especially the case if their property’s value is near Ft 30 million, which is where the new “wealth tax” on property and other assets to be introduced next year kicks in. Nothing like letting APEH help you so that you can really just help themselves.

A Hungo/American site in English with commentators

How many honest taxpayers are going to use the APEH self-help calculator system, do you think?
I am sure all the current businesses will stick to keeping two sets of books. I wanted to say “cooking the books” but I thought this was a bit too harsh.

Make no mistake. APEH is on the war path. Government/politicians need their pound of flesh. I know many magyar who are struggling big-time with APEH. They all are closing their businesses this year and firing all of their employees. They say it is just not worth it. And at 50% tax rates I say they are right. Better just go to the Balaton and eat langos.
