Deputy head of national asset manager resigns following criminal convicion

Fulop Benedek, deputy-CEO of Hungary’s National Asset Management Company (MNV), tendered his resignation to Finance Minister Peter Oszko on Thursday.

Mr Oszko accepted the resignation.

Mr Benedek was sentenced on Tuesday to 18 months imprisonment, suspended for three years probation by the Heves County Court for abuse of official position. He was also fined HUF 3m by the court.

The court procedure was started over the withdrawal from farming of a 202-hectare area of land near Pakozd, W of Budapest. Found illegal by the court, this resolution was passed in 2006 by the local land registry under unlawful pressure – according to the court – from Fulop Benedek, then state secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture.
