Opposition vows to restrict land purchases by foreigners after elections

The main opposition Fidesz party – if it forms Hungary’s next government – will introduce restrictions for foreign citizens wishing to buy arable land, Fidesz MEP Tamas Deutsch told reporters on Friday.

The new parliament will handle it as a priority to amend relevant laws so that foreigners can only buy land in Hungary if they are residents, Deutsch said.

The planned stipulation will be “sufficient to protect Hungary’s soil” but will not prevent a Danish farmer from buying an estate if he settles in the country, the MEP said for example. He added that the same principle is applied in Denmark.
