Hungarian state “wagering” almost Ft 1 billion on horse-racing firms

The State Asset Manager has agreed to provide Ft 840 million in funding in four equal installments to Hungarian horseracing companies.

The transfer and use of state money will be overseen under strict guidelines. The key to the future of horseracing is development of a nationwide-betting network. The council has agreed to call a tender to develop IT infrastructure of horse racing betting networks.

Manager of Budapest’s Kincsem Park racecourse Lajos Vajtó earlier said a system upgrade to stimulate betting on horseracing would cost Ft 5 billion.

    Seriously ! This is a f%cking joke!

Is this the best use they can put 840 million HUF to?

I’m guessing the only reason they expose it is so that they can not be acused of dodgy dealings. In any other country, in this political/economic climate, this would be unpalettable. From the rediculous to the sublime.

And for what? So that we encourage gambling and make some bookie richer. This is not a public service, why the f&ck should my taxes go towards this? 840 million HUF to the health service might buy the odd scanner or hospital rennovation. Give it to f&cking charity but to the gambling industry!!!!!

  2. Lovak says:

JD. If any more evidence was required to emphasize the whole rotten set up in this country – the above underpins just how fucking ludicrous the situation really is.
I heard sometime ago that a huge amount of EU money was to be poured into stud farms in-and-around Siofok. The sole purpose being to supply thoroughbreds for the Hungarian racing community.
It was supposed to create some 1,000 new jobs?
Not heard anything for a while, though. So, I assume it is just one more failure to add to the ever growing list.

  3. JD says:

    Really Lovak, stud farms ?

It would be funny if it wasn’t so sad.

A “glue factory” for redundant politicians may have been a better use of the money.

Sounds like a theme is developing here. I don’t suppose there are any governmental vested interests in the racing community. Perish the thought.

  4. mc says:

Political comments aside for a moment, but why on
earth can the private sector not get involved in a
betting network. Either that or why can’t someone
piggyback off Szerencsejaték which has networks in
    place already.

And what about tax on gambling? There is no
mention of that so is it safe to assume that
horseracing betting is not taxed. The last time I
won at blackjack at the casino I took all my
    winnings home.

I agree this is not a public service but I really
don’t think that wagering on horses “encourages
gambling” anymore than the number of opportunites
    that are already out there.

Personally I would love it if the horse racing
industry was able to grow and we could have more
meetings, but i am still waiting for Overdose to
    perform first, if ever.

  5. JD says:

MC, I would argue why does a Private Sector bunch of companies dealing with horse racing have to go to Public Sector finance to raise more cash for a profit orientated venture that only they will benefit from.

If it is such a good idea then they should take out a f&cking loan.

This is not about satisfying your hunger to gamble, this is about appropriate use of tax payers money.

Oh and by the way, “”a system upgrade to stimulate betting on horseracing” means gambling and therefore it is being encourage. Why the would they do it if they didn’t expect more gambling.

  6. Lovak says:

I enjoy horse racing and gambling. Overdose is a fantastic horse! Hope we can see it again in action!
I would encourage the horse racing sport. The gambling aspect, well, that’s up to the individual?
I take your point JD about the self-sufficiency angle for private companies to take out loans etc to bankroll the project and not be dependent (nor should they) on public money.
Many good riding schools and vast open spaces for galloping and training horses in Siofok, JD.
    Am I missing something?

  7. deng feng says:

Isnt socialism wonderful? Hungary needs one mayor, a tax rate of 5%. Thats it. Let the Eu dictate the rest. Give these politicians some tax money and they blow it at the track. You think magyarorszag can climb out of this fiasco? Good luck!

  8. deng feng says:

Did they do any research? Horse racing is in a multi-decade decline. No one goes. Horse betting is way down. Just absurd. Unless you are getting the government kickbacks, of course.

  9. Concepta Sue says:

JD etc get a fucking life stop wanking on your
computer screens and get some sunlight into those
hairy faces – get a bit of air into your lungs

there will always be gamblers if they weren’t
gamblers they’d be alcoholics or both if they
weren’t ….. horse racing is fun and can
contribute a lot more to charity than without –
good for job creation tourism and in general
having fun for everyone – rich poor families old
and young … besides its bugger all in the world
of horse racing and betting is the life blood of
the industry without it will just fall to the
wayside like everything else … have a flutter it
might stop you knockin one out of your keyboard
all day lond – this country needs some fun or we
will all end up like the communism and whing
whinge whinge whinge we all observed when we first
arrived …. I am off for some spanish watermelon
    good night sluts

  10. CrazyHorse says:

ConceptaSue. You know what you do best? Fucking a watermelon!
BTW. JD etc…hasn’t been in these parts for some considerable time. If you wasn’t such a plonka you would have known that.
One thing you can bet on is that Orban and friends will fuck up so we can all get our didgeridoos out and party on that little fact.

  11. Quasimodo says:

@Wolfi. Is that guy on the front of the Mad comic really you?
Valentine card in the post for you next year.
    Guaranteed!

  12. wolfi says:

    Yes, Quasimodo:

What me worry – that’s my motto …

PS: If you mean the late great William Gaines – yes he looked like me …

  13. QuakerOat says:

Wolfi. I never, ever, read a copy of Mad.
I think the nearest British equivalent was Private
    Eye?
Oddly enough, both rags were kept on the top
shelf in my local newsagents along with the porno and motoring magazines.
Tells you something about us Brits?
PS. Perhaps we could launch a vitriolic/satirical
version of the two on the unsuspecting Hungarian
    public, and call it, MadEye?
Plenty of material out there as you well know.
Ask Erik for a copy of a photo of the gormless Gyurscany, and we have the front cover sorted already!

  14. wolfi says:

    @QuakerOat:

Don’t think enough Hungarians are ripe for this kind of political humour – they have their parties to contend with anyway.

Even in God’s Own Country MAD’s circulation is fading – it has also gone from monthly to quarterly, well times are difficult …

Gallows humour is not for everybody …
