Tesco-Global Aruhazak, the Hungarian unit of UK supermarket chain Tesco, expects to close 2009 with turnover of slightly more than the HUF 602bn in 2008, deputy-CEO Erzsebet Antal said on Friday.
Because of the crisis, shoppers started to be attracted to price discounts, so Tesco put more than HUF 10bn toward cutting prices, more than usual, Ms Antal said. At the same time, overall prices rose bout 2pc, he added.
CEO Per Bank said the unit’s main goal was to keep shoppers in light of growing unemployment, the higher VAT rate and a decision to eliminate public sector workers’ annual bonuses.
The number of Tesco hypermarkets in Hungary rose by 12 to 102 in 2009. The number of smaller TescoExpressz units climbed by 11 to 19. Including the 26 Smarket stores in North Hungary, Tesco has 178 units in Hungary.
When Ms Antal says “Tesco put more than HUF 10bn toward cutting prices” what she meant to say is “Tesco ripped consumers off HUF 10bn less in 2009″.
Still offering the same bruised fruits, green meat and scrapings off the factory floors, just for a bit less. Well they do say “Every little helps”
If Tesco Hungary was as good as Tesco in the UK the counrty would have a new Disney Land
Agree 100% with these two fine comments, especially jd!!
Tesco.hu is a bloody disgrace, makes you feel ashamed to be english!!
Also, tesco in uk,is not much better, they also rip british customers off more than other uk supermarkets!!
Im trying my best to improve quality food in hungary,i own the “English food shop,3300,eger,almagyar utca,7.
We import 100% direct from the uk,all your favourite quality uk foods&alcohol!!
I try to keep prices down, but unfortunatly, its very expensive to bring food from uk!!
So,to compete with shitty tesco,i need the brits to come from bpest and support us,and then i can keep prices down, sell more, and hopefully open a shop in bpest!!
I will be looking at a website address in the future!!
We are open 7 days a week, call me on=06.20.628.4282,if you have any queries about what products we sell!! At the moment its about 200,like cadburys caramel(REAL) noy like the polish shit what tesco sell!!
Hope to see you in eger, lets try to take some more profit awawy from greedy tesco!!!!
Merry christmas.cheers.
Adrian, good luck, and if you can get your hands on
a shipment of Creme Eggs come Eastertime I might
make a trip Eger-ward.

All the best.
Hey Adrian, best of British !
Two things that are rarer than hens teeth over here are Twiglets and Warburtons Super Toastie. Any chance?
Actually, any normal sized loaf is rare over here but the chances of spotting the Warburtons Super Toastie is probably less than your average lottery win.
Hello JD,
Ok,twiglets i can definetly get,but bread is a no,no!!
It takes 7-8 days to get here, even air freight is 4 days or so!!!
But,i would love to get some bread in the future,im working on it,i miss hovis seed sensations!!!
Im also gonna look into cheese and bacon, problem is i need to sell huge volumes!!
When we opened on oct 28th i had all the crisps,walkers,prawn cocktail,smoky bacon,worcester sauce,even wheat crunchies,mc.coys!!!
Problem is,no brits have come from bpest, crisps have short dates, hungarians wont buy crazy flavour crisps!!
So,now i only got walkers, ready salted 6 packs, cheese&onion+salt.n.vinegar,which hungarians actually love!!! Also got pringles sour cream, plain, cheese&onion and salt.n.vinegar!!
For xmas i got mr kiplings mince pies, xmas puddings,kp nuts, cadburys choky raisins and peanuts, how good is that!!!!!
My shop ios real home from home jd,come and see us,its amazing to be so far from home and have all your food here!!
I will look into breads i promise, but its very difficult, but leave it with me ok!!
Cheers.
Good news on the creme egg front then – I never
heard of those!
Seriously though, I guess you won’t find it easy
in business down there. The expats are in Budapest
and with a bit of searching many items can be
found, I can even get Irish cheddar. I don’t
think many will travel down to Eger specifically
for crisps and chocolate…
And if you don’t mind a bit of constructive
criticism, I really don’t think kicking Tesco’s
crappy ass should be your goal. Some suggestions,
take or leave:
1) There are one or two places in Budapest
selling similar items (less range but the basics)
which will catch most of the expats before you do,
so you will have to work hard to develop a market.
2) I strongly recommend a web site – nothing
fancy, a detailed product listing is enough for
starters – and it can be free and self-built, e.g.
David Wilkinson’s sausage site is on the free
webs.com.
3) Consider supplementing a website with
delivery to Budapest. Free delivery over a certain
amount to stimulate interest.
4) If you are paying rent on a premises,
consider if it is money well-spent. Most likely
you will run at a loss on drop-in business if you
are paying any significant rent, at least for the
immediate future while you build a market (as
indeed most small businesses do).
5) eh, I don’t mean to get personal, but work
on your writing style a bit. Sorry!
Just my tuppence-hapenny.
Hi benny,
What difference does my writing style make??
All i want is to sell quality food, but i guess brits are just too bloody lazy to come to Eger??
For gods sake,once a month,take it turns,nice day out,or weekend,away from bpest,drink some great wine,and buy all your favourite foods,not just a few!!!
Sorry, but until you stand in my shop, you dont know how good it is!!
Also, tesco is the big, big, problem in hungary!!!
Most hungarians hate it,rightly so!!!
I mean, your typical, you tell me you want creme egg,i tell you i got it,but you say so what!!!
I give up with budapest, its such a shame, cos hungary is a small country, and theres so much nicer places than bpest!!!!!
Im defo gonna look into cheese, mature english cheddar, see how it goes!!
Website will follow, but hands full with shop at moment!!
All the best anyway.
One more thing Benny,i dont just sell crisps and chocolate???
i sell breakfast cereal,like sugar puffs,alpen,porridge,to horlicks,massive selection of marmalade&jam,mc.vities,cadburys biscuits,jammie dodgers,jaffa cakes,even corned beef!!!!
drinks, the only place in hungary to get boddingtons, tetleys, john smiths bitters,or carling,or strongbow, scrumpy jack cider!!!How about schweppes ginger beer,or ribena, ready to drink!!!
Also original guiness,plus a very special new guiness,”Foreign extra”,its 7.5% alcohol!!!
Dont even bother loooking in budapest for these things, cos you wont find them!!!
By the way,i just had a creme egg twisted, bloody lovely!!
All the best.
It is simply wonderful that magyarok can choose amongst 20 brands of toothpaste. That is really advanced living. Love those 3$ tomatoes at Tesco. All the chinese made goods you could want. Feels just like good ol’ USA….
@dengfeng:
Only 20 varieties of toothpaste ? Poor guy, our Interspar has probably a hundred, at least 10 varieties just of Blendamed – I never know which one to choose…
Merry Christmas, everyone – and don’t forget: Shop til’ you drop!
All that talk of food is making me feel very hungry.
That is, I must say, until I walked around my local CBA store. They had large displays of “things” in jars that looked as though they’d just been
fished out of a swamp. The smell in the store didn’t
impress me,either.
@Adrian. Good luck with your business. Apart from wondering about the size and the price of your Guinness, my one big question is, do you have Lucozade (original)? Happy Xmas.
