Hungary’s finance ministry has denied a report in Wednesday’s issue of the political daily Magyar Nemzet that the International Monetary Fund had induced the ministry to pay HUF 5.1bn (EUR 18.72m) in bonuses to employees of the Hungarian tax office APEH and the Hungarian Customs and Finance Guard (VP) earlier in December, the finance ministry stated on Wednesday.
The finance ministry said in a statement on Wednesday that it had paid the bonuses because APEH and VP had achieved positive results in 2009.
