Usage-based motorway tolls to be introduced no earlier than 2013

Hungary will introduce a road toll system for commercial vehicles based on usage, rather than a period of time, no earlier than 2013, the Transportation Development Coordination Centre (KKK), which is working on a reform of the toll system, told MTI on Thursday.

Even after the system is introduced, it will be several years before its scale reaches the international average, KKK said.

Hungary’s State Motorway Management Company (AAK) called a tender in 2007 to build and operate an electronic toll system that would be based on kilometres travelled, replacing the current system of passes available on a daily to annual basis, thus giving haulage companies an incentive to use the motorway instead of smaller main roads which pass through residential areas.
