Audi Hungaria production declines in 2009 due to economic crisis

The German carmaker Audi’s plant in Gyor (NW Hungary) manufactured close to 1.4m engines and 32,600 passenger cars in 2009, compared to 1.9m engines and 60,00 passenger cars in 2008, Audi Hungaria Motor told MTI on Wednesday.

The company attributed the decrease to deteriorating market conditions.

Audi Hungaria CEO Thomas Faustmann told MTI that the company handled the challenges encountered in 2009 successfully, noting that Audi Hungaria launched serial production of eleven new types of engine and the Audi TT RS sports car during the year.

The engines produced by Audi Hungaria are supplied to Audi and Volkswagen production plants worldwide, and are fitted into Audi, Volkswagen, Skoda and Seat models.

Audi Hungarian produced 18,000 Audi TT Coupes and 4800 Audi TT Roadsters. The plant also made almost 9800 Audi A3 Cabriolets.

At the end of 2009, Audi Hungaria had a headcount of 5,624.

Audi Hungaria Motor, a 100pc subsidiary of Audi AG, has been one of Hungary’s biggest exporters for many years.
