Veres nominated for EBRD vice president

Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai has nominated former Finance Minister Janos Veres for a vice president’s post at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), daily Nepszabadsag said on Wednesday, citing its “own reliable sources”.

Mr Veres was Finance Minister in the government of Ferenc Gyurcsány which resigned last spring.

Mr Bajnai and President of EBRD Thomas Mirrow have already “compared notes” on Mr Veres, and Mr Mirrow “was happy” with the nomination of a Hungarian to the post, Nepszabadsag said.

Results of the nomination process et EBRD are expected within two weeks, the paper said.

Government spokesman Domokos Szollar declined comment on a query of the daily.

EBRD had already had a Hungarian vice president, Miklos Nemeth, Prime Minister of Hungary between 1988-1990. Mr Nemeth served with EBRD between 1991-2000.
