A Budapest court announced on Friday that former director of the capital’s transport company (BKV) Attila Antal has been put under house arrest.
Criminal proceedings are under way against Antal who was taken into custody on Tuesday on fraud and other charges, the court said on its website.
The court ruled on a proposal by the Public Prosecutor’s Office and put Antal under house arrest for 30 days, until February 28.
Spokeswoman of the Public Prosecutor’s Office Gabriella Skoda said that Antal had given a detailed statement to police and had cooperated with them in the investigation.
Police said on Tuesday that Antal, as director of BKV between January 1, 2007 and April 17, 2008, seriously violated the company’s asset management regulations by signing contracts for unnecessary services. In addition, he approved the payment of excessive severance payments.
The former human resources director of BKV, Eleonora Szilagyi, was arrested in early January for alleged embezzlement after she had received 86 million forints (EUR 320,000) in severance pay.
Antal is currently director of long-distance bus company Vertes Volan.
