The number of guests and guest nights spent by visitors to Budapest fell about 11pc in 2009, but the drop was still smaller than declines in the capitals of other countries in the region, Budapest deputy mayor Imre Ikvai-Szabo said at a press conference on Friday.
The number of travellers who stayed in the capital last year fell 11.2pc to 2.3m, and the number of guest nights dropped 11.1pc to 5.4m, Mr Ikvai-Szabo said. The number of guest nights fell a steeper 11.4pc in Prague, 20.3pc in Bratislava, 16pc in Ljubljana and 14.9pc in Tallinn, he added.
Laszlo Fekete, managing director of BTH, the capital’s tourism agency, said revenue from tourism in Budapest fell 15.7pc in 2009. Within this, gross revenue from accommodations was down 15.5pc.
Tax revenue from tourism in the capital was down by about one-quarter, or HUF 1bn, in 2009, Mr Ikvai-Szabo said, answering a question.
