Single-party gov’t would give economy great opportunity, says opposition head

The establishment of a single-party government after general elections would open the way to enormous opportunity for the Hungarian economy, Viktor Orban, head of opposition Fidesz, told members of the Hungarian Industry of Trade and Industry (MKIK) on Thursday.

The only worthwhile goal today ought to be concentrating political powers to allow the formation of a single-party government in Hungary, for the first time in 20 years, Mr Orban said. It is, however, too early to speculate about Fidesz winning a two-thirds majority in Parliament, Mr Orban added.

Fidesz is tipped to win the general elections in April.

The next government’s tasks will include exposing the true state of the economy, tailoring conditions for businesses that are simpler and easier to fulfill, restoring payment discipline among business partners, renewing foreign economic ties, and defending the engines of the Hungarian economy, such as its farmland, water resources, Hungarian products, Hungarian producers and consumers, Mr Orban said. The essence of a policy that puts national affairs first is that if the Hungarian economy is to be put on its feet, it has to stand on Hungarian feet, he added.

Hungary needs a government that can ensure stability and restore investors confidence with a strong and sustainable budget, Mr Orban said. Policy and economy have to be brought together and operate in tandem, and at the center of this cooperation should be workplace creation, he said. If policy and economy strive to achieve this goal, a million jobs could be created in ten years.

If Fidesz wins the confidence of voters, the economic chapter of the government programme will be prepared together with MKIK, Mr Orban said.

Mr Orban and MKIK chairman Laszlo Parragh signed a joint declaration on their goals.
