SCD says it has no contract to operate Balaton airport

SCD Group made the best offer in a tender to operate an airport in Sarmellek, but a contract on the matter has not yet been signed, the property developer told MTI on Friday, reacting to press reports.

Balaton Development Council chairman Tamas Suchman said after a meeting of the council earlier in the day that SCD Group would start operating the airport from April 1, while its former operator goes under liquidation. It was also reported SCD Group aimed to bring 50,000 passengers to the airport in 2010.

SCD Group said it is still in talks with the airport’s owners and noted that the passenger number reported did not reflect its own calculations.

Passenger numbers at the airport plunged from about 120,000 in 2008 to 15,000 in 2009 after its biggest partner, Irish low-fare airline Ryanair, stopped flights to the destination. Cape Clear Aviation, the airport’s former operator, was ordered under liquidation by a local court in November.

SCD Group owns a number of tourism properties around Lake Balaton.

    While other airports in the area continue to increase trafic, we do everything possible to turn business away. If you think that Fly Balaton has now not become a political issue then we are all sadly mistaken. The political party in power claims to have been involved in the negotiations to reopen the airport, the owner of the airport who is in liquidation now claims otherwise..funny they were both in bed together for the last 4 years..oh wait we all know who are the next election winners..so as the airport owner (who is still bankrupt) lets cut our losses get out of bed with the old political
    party by embarrasing them in public last week..and lets cozy up to the next election winners..maybe they to will throw a few hundred million forints our way!! then we can go bankrupt again and screw the local businisses, the incoming tourists, and everything normal in other countries..Minnie, Louis, Wolfi..all together now what country are we in?????????

    @peter: just poated on another thread about Lufthansa in 2010 – so there is still some hope for Fly Balaton (and for us people in the vicinity)
