Rumors spreading of Fidesz-IMF deal

Fidesz representatives and the IMF have held preliminary negotiations, according to rumours that were rife in London on Friday.

The IMF has allegedly told Fidesz – the clear favourite to win the national elections in April – that it would accept a budget deficit of 5-5.5% of GDP for 2010, increasing the official target from 3.8%, online media reported.

In exchange, the IMF expects Fidesz to carry out Hungary’s most radical budget-restructuring measures since the change of regime.

Surely it’s very unorthodox for a party not
currently in power to negotiate with the IMF?
Regardless of opinion polls, wouldn’t this be a kind
    of diplomatic breach of protocol?

  2. quatermass says:

Whaddya mean – unorthodox? This is Hungary! They can do
anything they want! Good grief… you haven’t been here very long,
    have you?

  3. Ballotbollox says:

Unorthodox. Bowl me a googly, Gazzer!
IMF help before the bank has opened? Whatever next. The same old line-your-own pockets first, brigade.
What a pile of dogshit these politicians really are!
Why anyone would bother voting is a mystery.
