EU Commissioner Andor calls for strong pension reform

EU pension systems need to be overhauled, especially in terms of changing the age of retirement, not because of the economic crisis but due to an aging population, Laszlo Andor, EU Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, told MTI on Thursday.

“We must be careful when justifying the reform so that people do not take it as a measure of crisis management,” Andor said.

Changing the age of retirement should be incorporated in the European policy of making seniors more active, the Hungarian Commissioner said.

The commissioner also referred to an interview carried in Austria’s Kurier daily, which quoted him as saying that a deep pension reform was untimely because it would just make things worse. Andor said that he had been misinterpreted.
