Euro good to Hungary once operation of economy becomes normal, Lamfalussy says

Hungary would benefit from the introduction of the euro, but only after “the operation of the economy became normal and the exchange rate stabilised”, former head of the European Monetary Institute Sandor Lamfalussy said on a programme of the Hungarian state television channel M1 on Sunday evening.

There is a need for the reform of the education, health, pension and tax systems in Hungary, and the next government has to carry out these tasks, he said.

“If markets feel trouble they always overreact”, he said when asked about speculation against the euro.

The euro zone is sufficiently strong and he saw no need to worry about the future of the euro, Mr Lamfalussy said but added that Greece must put its budget in order.
