Fidesz sets up economic investigation committee

The main opposition Fidesz party has decided to set up an “economic fact finding committee”, party leader Viktor Orban told a business forum on Monday.

Orban spoke at an economic policy conference of the Federation of Entrepreneurs and Employers, and said that the new committee, headed by former Finance Minister Mihaly Varga, was to perform a full screening of the entire economy.

The screening is necessary because “the government has gotten into the habit of hiding or falsifying budget figures,” Orban said.

“The dilemma is how, after the elections, we will present the real situation of the country to the world without finding ourselves in the situation of Greece,” Orban added.

Government Spokesman Domokos Szollar said that Fidesz was “trying to force an open gate” as budget figures and the data pertaining to the economic situation are available to all democratic parties participating in the elections.

“There are no skeletons in the cupboard, the government has put its cards on the table … so that the election campaign be based on well-founded promises, enabling voters to make a sound decision and the parties to prepare for government,” Szollar said.
